Introduction to Application Book

Application has some specific features, like corresponding protocol, port number, application type, etc. Application is an essential element for the configuration of multiple StoneOS modules including policy rules, NAT rules, application QoS management, etc. StoneOS ships with over 100 predefined services and over 20 predefined application group. Besides, you can also customize user-defined application and application groups as needed. All these applications and application groups are stored in and managed by StoneOS application book.

Predefined Applications and Predefined Application Groups

StoneOS provides multiple predefined applications. The system can identify the application type based on the content and action of the application. Different platforms support different predefined applications. The predefined application group contains the corresponding predefined applications, which facilitates the configuration. When upgrading predefined application signature database, the predefined application group will be upgraded simultaneously.

User-defined Application Group

A user-defined application group can contain the specified applications. You can apply the application group to the policy of the device, which simplifies the management. StoneOS application group has the following features:

• Each application entry in the application book can be used by one or more application group.
• An application group can contain another application group. StoneOS can support up to 8-level nested application groups.

An application group also has its restrictions:

• The names of an application group and an application cannot be identical.
• The application group referenced by the policy cannot be deleted. To delete an application group, make sure that no module references this application group.
